Zeolite in horticulture

Natural zeolite acts as a soil conditioner. Due to its capacity to absorb and hold water and high ion-exchange capacity, natural zeolite provides for creation of most favourable conditions for the plant nutrient uptake. It prevents washout of mineral fertilizers from tilth-top soil, thus reducing fertilizer losses and the total input, as well as diminishing the process of soil salinization.

Zeolite facilitates soil aeration, retention of adequate amount of water in the roots zone, roots intensive development and improvement of plant growth. Natural zeolite ion-exchange properties allow to cut down the level of various toxic substances in the soil, including pesticides and heavy metals thus reducing their content in the final product.

Besides its wide-scale application in the farm fields for growing field crop, zeolite provides for obtaining excellent results when used for growing green crops and fruit crops in the hothouse facilities and on the household plots. This is also true for house plants. Thanks to its beneficial properties, zeolite is utilized in making green roofs, green lawns, golf courses and playing- grounds for other sports.

How it works

Crystal lattice structure of natural zeolite enables this mineral to absorb water in great amounts – up to 32 % of its own volume. Unlike other materials used for soil aeration (e.g. foamed perlite and clay pellets), zeolite is capable of holding water in its pores network thanks to its constituents, including  metal cations that act as a magnet and trap water molecules. Thus, in the event of draughts water contained in zeolite granules does not go back to soil but moves directly to the plant roots.

By retaining water, zeolite prevents depth penetration of water dissolved fertilizers. High ion-exchange capacity of zeolite provides for its ability to “absorb” and deliver the fertilizer elements together with moisture to the plant roots zone proportionally and at a steady pace. Zeolite capacity for accumulation and proportioning allows to cut the frequency of application and the total amount of fertilizers used, obtain more healthy production and upgrade soil quality, thus preventing soil salinization and contamination.

Benefits of zeolite application

  • improves soil capability of water retention
  • reduces nutrients washout
  • increases efficiency of fertilizer application – allows to retain nutrients, such as N, K, Ca, Mg, in the tilth-top soil, regulate their content and slow release in the soil
  • improves soil structure (soil aeration)
  • maintains plant roots growth
  • prevents subsoil water pollution by substances used for soil application
  • amends the soil рH value
  • improves ion exchange in the soil
