Zeolite in fishing industry

In the process of industrial fish farming and transportation natural zeolite is used to help maintain quality of water. Fish amount in water is in direct proportion to the extent of contamination of the fishery basin, i.e. the higher is the amount of fish in the pond, the higher is the degree of water pollution, which, in its turn, affects fish health status and development.

How it works

High ion-exchange properties of natural zeolite enable fast diminishment of ammonia, nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations that poison fish and facilitate excessive growth of bacteria and weed in the basin. The process of zeolite application is fairly simple. It is scattered on the bottom of the water body or applied as a filtering element in the flow-through filters. Average amount of natural zeolite application by scattering on the bottom is 500 kg of zeolite per hectare of the lake surface area.

However, in reality it is necessary to take into consideration the impact of many factors, such as the amount of fish per cubic meter of water, the degree of water aeration, average temperature, etc. Also, when implementing this particular method of zeolite application, it is necessary to consider the process of the mineral granules working in the bottom soil of the basin and, when needed, scatter an additional amount on the basin bottom.

Benefits of zeolite application

  • Provides for water purity and maintains long-term natural purification of water
  • Adsorbs ammonia, nitrogen and phosphorus from the water body
  • Diminishes weed amount in the basin, creates conditions needed for presence of nitrifying bacteria
  • Adsorbs nitrocompounds
  • Neutralizes acid water in water bodies
  • Absorbs ammonia nitrogen, heavy metals and some organic substances
