The use of natural zeolites in livestock farming and poultry farming is an example of one of the most effective zeolite application areas. The first zeolite experiments performed in the 60-ies of the last century first in Japan and later in USA proved that its application as a dietary supplement to animal feed allows to reduce morbidity rates, increase the farm productive efficiency and cut down the feed input.
Mechanism of zeolite influence on the poultry organism is relatively simple. When getting into the gastrointestinal tract, it slows down the food bolus movement and increases the degree of digestion. Also, it reduces the fermentation processes through binding toxins and gases released by bacteria, primarily ammonia and mercaptans, which also affects favourably the extent of feed assimilation and animal health status.
Successful employment of zeolite in livestock farming is proved by the results obtained in the farms making use of natural zeolite with clinoptilolite content up to 80 % (65-80 %). As far as cattle is concerned, zeolite addition to mixed feed in the amount of 2 to 4 % allows to reduce calf mortality rate, increase milk yield volumes by 5-8 % and improve the quality of milk. In swine breeding the addition of zeolite in the amount of 3 to 5 % leads to an increase in pigs livability by 5-6 %, an increase in weight gain in young fat stock by 6-10 %, a rise in activity of male pigs during tupping time, which provides for an addidional increase in the number of the postpartum sows up to 10 %.
Zeolite offered by ZEOTECA has clinoptilolute content exceeding 80 % (up to 94 %), therefore its application rates can be lowered. Zeolite can be added directly in a complex forage mixture in the volume recommended - swines 6 – 10 g/kg of forage up to 1 % in the feed, cattle – 150-200 g per animal per day up to 1 % in the feed. It can be added to the complex mixture according to the add-on method or by replacement of any of the feed constituents, e.g. wheat, wheat or rice shorts and others in the respective proportioning by volume. Zeolite can be also applied directly in the animal stalls for cattle, swines and other animals as a filler material to capture ammonia and make the smell less pungent.
